Kemble Station was opened by Great Western Railway (GWR) in 1882. Until the 1960s the station was a junction, with branch lines to Cirencester and Tetbury. The former branch lines can still be seen, just before the tunnel after Kemble station (going towards Swindon). Both the Tetbury branch line and the Cirencester Branch Line were closed to traffic under The Reshaping of British Railways in 1964.
